Client Story: Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care That Preserved Independence

The Challenge

A client in Boerne, Texas, was showing signs of early dementia and needed additional support to stay safe and healthy while maintaining independence. After recently selling her home and car, she moved into an independent living community. While the facility provided meals and basic cleaning, it did not cover the level of hands-on support she needed, and the family was not ready to move her into assisted living.

What happened

As care began, the immediate focus was medication reminders and companionship, especially while family members traveled out of state. Caregivers also supported quality of life by providing transportation and outings to familiar places like grocery stores, parks, and local shops. Over time, caregivers noticed frequent complaints of pain and nausea and encouraged a medical evaluation. This led to the discovery of serious health issues that required multiple surgeries, including gallbladder removal.

How we helped

CareCo provided Alzheimer’s and dementia care that balanced safety with independence. Caregivers assisted with medication reminders, homemaker services, and transportation while building strong, trusting relationships. When health concerns arose, caregivers spoke up quickly, helping the family address the issue before it became more serious. After surgery, CareCo supported the client through hospitalization and rehabilitation, then provided 24-hour care during the first weekend back home. Today, care has transitioned back to twice-daily visits for medication reminders and outings, allowing the client to return to her routine with confidence and continued support.
